From donuts to donations or dough

I need helping making a decision. It's not a hard decision at all, it's just that I'm pregnant and when I'm pregnant, I'm indecisive. For example, I just stood in the kitchen for four minutes, trying decide if I'd like to eat a chocolate donut or a handful of Thin Mints for a quick snack. And really? That was easy. I had both. but it took awhile to get to that decision.

And just so you know, I don't usually have donuts on hand, but I was at the grocery store earlier, and decided on a whim that I just HAD to have a chocolate donut. I backtracked across the store and got the very last one. Did you read that? The LAST one. It was meant to be. And it was delicious.

But here's the horrible, selfish mom part: I only got one. While Brody happily munched on his cookie from the bakery, I quickly and quietly dropped my treasured chocolate donut in a bag (did I mention it was the last one?) and we went on our merry way. So as badly as I wanted to devour the whole thing when we got home, I couldn't. Brody's eagle eye would've spotted it, because that boy can sniff out a donut with the best of them. Just ask anyone after church on a Sunday morning, who sees him sitting on his perch next to the windows, scarfing down his donut. I snuck nibbles of the chocolate donut here and there this morning, but once he was down for a nap, I downed it. And then I ate the Thin Mints. And then I wished I'd saved just a bite of the chocolate donut to wash down the Thin Mints.

But anyway, back to the decision I'm trying to make.

For a year or so, I've been decluttering the house and boxing up the things we don't want anymore. I probably have 20 boxes and stuff in a growing pile in the basement, waiting for a summer garage sale. There are three more up in my room, waiting to be taken to the basement. My dilemma is that I'm not sure anymore if I want to have a garage sale, or just donate all the stuff.

On one hand, I LOVE garage sales. I love HOSTING them, but I don't really love going to them. I think organizing and pricing all of the treasures (hey, they'll be treasures to SOMEONE!) is so fun. And then people watching and guessing who will walk away with what is so very entertaining to me. My mom and sisters and I joke that we should go into the garage sale business, organizing and running them for people. (I even made a business card for my mom once.) But then, isn't that the same as working at a thrift store? That doesn't appeal to me at all.

The little bit of money we'd make from the garage sale would come in handy, but I'm not sure it will be worth all the work it will take putting it together this summer when I'll be really pregnant. But they are fun...

But then there's a part of me that thinks I should just haul it all up from the basement and donate it. Then it's just GONE and benefitting others. It's not in our way, it's just stashed in a corner of the basement. So it's not a matter of needing the space.

I do plan to donate whatever I don't sell if I go the garage sale route, but then I feel guilty for getting rid of the "leftovers."

And then there's always the Craigslist and consignment shop option for some of the nicer things.

OH, THE STRESS!

I know, this really isn't a hard decision.

So what do YOU do? Garage sale? Donate? A little of both?

  1. Personally, I HATE yard sales. Haven't had one in years and don't plan to have one ever again. Too much work for too little profit.

    I donate all of our stuff. I give my kids' clothes to friends and I get rid of bigger, nicer things we don't want on FreeCycle.org {Check it out!}

I have sold a few things on Craigslist in the past, but really only big ticket items like bike trailers and my jogging stroller. Seriously most of the time I'd rather give our old stuff to someone who needs it.

  2. You crack me up with your donut vs. cookie decision. I think having both was the right choice :)
Here is what I do when I donate/give away stuff:
Keep in mind I have never been to a garage sale!
All clothes I give away to GoodWill. For baby clothes, I give them to friends who want them or I then I donate them to Good Will.
For bigger items (ex: baby bouncer, stroller, baby swing, etc...I sold all of those on craigslist. I LOVE craigslist!)
For baby toys, I give them to our church nursery & if they don't want them, they donate them to a women's shelter.
Good luck with your decision :)

  3. I'm about to say something shocking, so let me start with a word of affirmation: The decision to have a donut AND Thin Mints? Totally the right call.

As to the garage sale. This might be the first area I've ever discovered where we are different. I loathe garage sales in all forms. So I might not be the best person to answer your question.

But my advice is to sell the best or biggest stuff on Craigs List and donate the rest to charity. We have some awesome Christian thrift stores here in Minneapolis; I love donating to them, because I believe in their mission. But even the Goodwill and Salvation Army do great work. Not only will you get another jewel for your crown, but you'll save a ton of time. And you can't have extra of that lying around these days. (And if you do, can I have some? Or maybe you could just share a bit of your chocolate donut?)

  4. How about I present you w/ a 3rd option .... donate it to be sold ! Remember the garage sale fundraiser we did when we were raising money to bring Malachi home ?? Anyway - the Heassler's are doing that same thing this spring/summer. They are gonna start collecting stuff soon, I think. Just a thought ! :)

  6. I totally can relate to waiting til nap to have certain snacks! It helps us moms maintain our sanity!!

I love to have garage sales but I NEVER price anything! I just let people make offers, it's so much easier! I say have the gargage sale, let your kids sell lemonade and cookies and make it a family event!
    Or just donate it, whatever!
See, I'm indecisive ALL the time!

  8. Angie, we could snack together so well. Although, only one donut could be bad for our friendship if we had to share.

I think it is wonderful that you like to do garage sales, but for me your pregnancy is the trump card -- don't take on anything extra right now if you don't have to. That's my two cents.

PS. Thanks for your recent comments. I feel like you are a blogging celebrity so when you comment on my blog it is extra thrilling:).

  9. Let's clarify...YOU like garage sales, I don't. I like garage sales with YOU. Garage sales give me anxiety, I loathe wheeling/dealing on items, taking the money, etc. I'm not a morning person either. I come because I like the sister/mom time and the crazy antics you come up with (and I do mean CRAZY!!!).

So...I'm in for a garage sale for the entertainment value. But, (don't hate me) I'm leaning more toward DONATIONS this time!!!!

    Love ya!
