Tinkle Trouble

I'm writing this post from the Land of Nod. Make that, the Land of Nodding Off. I'm so tired.

It seems that Brody isn't too fond of sleep. At least not during the wee hours of the morning. And actually, not a whole lot during the day either. In fact, at this very moment, the little man is crying his little heart out in his crib. So this might be a short post. (Was that a collective sigh of relief I just heard?)

I didn't come here to post about sleep, or the lack thereof, even if I am a little tired. Did I say that already?

No, I'm here to talk about potty training. Or the lack thereof.

I think I've asked Addie to use the potty about 328 times today.

I think Brody will be potty trained before Addie. There. It's in writing now, so I can gleefully say, "I told you so!" when Brody proudly moves on from his diapers before Addie. He's currently in size "N" for Newborn (not even in a size 1 yet), so don't hold your breath. It'll be a few years. Addie will be in kindergarten or 1st grade by then, and I'm not sure they make diapers that big. Or maybe it's size "D" for Depends.

Miss Addie has absolutely no desire to put diapers behind her and put her behind on the toilet.

I've bribed her. I've rewarded her. I've reasoned with her.

I've let her play all day in a soggy, smelly diaper to show her just how uncomfortable diapers are.

She doesn't care.

She's too busy to care. She has better things to do than take the time to go potty. (Okay, she comes by this naturally. That's a whole 'nother post.)

Potty training Emma was mostly a breeze. Sure, we had to explain that pull-ups are more special than diapers so she didn't go through them like crazy ("oh well, let's get another one!"), but once she put her Cinderella panties on, we were done. I think the icing on the cake was when she got to show Cinderella her Cinderella panties at Disneyland. That's when it was worth it to Emma.

And okay, we finally just perfected wiping, because Emma's logic was that "my panties wipe for me." (Was that a collective "EWWW!" I heard? I couldn't hear it clearly over my own "OH, GROSS!")

But Addie...

Today she was in tears because she has a horrid diaper rash. I tried explaining that it's because she doesn't want to use the big girl potty and won't tell me if she's wet. So, around noon today I took off her diaper once and for all and decided that cleaning up an accident here and there is better than paying for another box of diapers and sending her to her senior prom in Pampers.

So I've had a nudie cutie running around half the day.

(There was a photo here, but I took it down... I got paranoid!)

(A nudie cutie who thought it would be fun to pretend her markers were lipstick.)

I've only had to clean up one tiny accident so far. Maybe we should've given up diapers cold turkey months ago!

Like maybe when she started changing her own diapers.

I guess I don't pick up on cues too quickly.

Did I mention I'm sleep deprived?

  1. I hope you only have to deal with teeny accidents today! We tried cold turkey with Henry and well after a few not so teeny accidents I called it quits. Let us know how it turns out. Good Luck!

  2. Psalm 126:5 says "Those who sow in tears will reap in joy." This is my mommy verse that I keep close to my heart. Now I'm passing it on to you.
Praying for all of your difficult but worth it transitions right now...and wanted to encourage you as a person who has been there, with an almost 9 year old, 7 year old, 4 year old, and almost 2 year old. Hugs to you, sleepy one!

  3. I was wondering what was all over Addie's mouth! LOL

Adorable pics... at the risk of sounding cliche, "This too shall pass..." I mean... you'll move past this stage. :) I don't envy you! I'm glad all my potty training days are behind me.

Love the photo frames in that last pic! :)

C'mon Addie... you can do it!

  5. Oh Angie .... your story is the same story I had about Eden 2 years ago. :) Must be a second child thing. Dr. Steitz was always comforting ... he said in all his years of practice, he's never seen a child graduate high school in diapers. :) Hang in there tired mama!

  6. I laughed OUT LOUD when I read this:

"Okay, she comes by this naturally. That's a whole 'nother post."

Yes it is, isn't it! LOL!

I pray you get some good sleep soon. It's hard. Know that it will get better. Still no fun when you're going through it, though. ::hug::

  7. Oh Angie... I feel your pain! And therefore can justify my current stomach ache from laughing so hard while reading this. I think I can skip my crunches in the morning! Thanks! We sailed with Z but I thought I would loose my mind with K. E was a breeze. Maybe it is a birth order thing... in that case your prediction may be accurate. In any case many loving thoughts are coming your way.

  8. Aw great, don't tell me that potty training is harder for the 2nd one. We are not doing so hot with Henry.

  9. All the best!

I can't be of much help here, since I'm just a 19 year old studying for exams!$ EXAMS! -shudders- Take care!

  10. Good luck!!! We had an aweful time potty training Emmaline. She was perfectly content to wear diapers and pull-ups. I bought her panties for Christmas.... didn't work. She wore a pull-up to her own 3rd birthday party. I just knew she was going to start kindergarten in them. Then about 2 months later (and a LOT of accidents), she finally got it. We still don't have a perfect record, but it is improving. Good luck!

  12. She is so stinkin' cute! Don't you dare, never ever, get mad or raise your voice at her.(Not that you do)
She is too adorable for you to get mad at.

  13. Oh so funny! It's so nice to hear that your child is indifferent to potty training, because Talan was the same way! And JUST when I FINALLY got him potty trained, he got really constipated after being sick...and now we're starting all ...over...again... ugh!

  14. I've been silently watching your blog for months, and want to say congrats on your newest arrival. Your faith is an example to your readers, and your blog is a great ministry to show that God will pull us through it...what ever "it" might be!

I had to comment on the potty training. I had such a great experience with my first, that I feel the need to share the book I have with everyone. Granted, you are an experienced mommy, so you know how it's done...but I potty trained by daughter, who'd rather sit in a wet diaper than walk into a bathroom, when she was only 21 months (almost 22). It basically follows the same theory - toss the diapers and don't turn back. I decided to Potty train during my last week of Maternity Leave after having my son, and in 11 days she was going on the potty like a champ. Granted, for the first 2 days she was naked all day and I had never been so thankful for hardwoods before, but on the third day she just got it. It took several more days of practice, but each day got better and better....but we never turned back to diapers, never used pull ups! If you're interested in the book, I'll email it to you. Just stop by my blog and leave me a message and we'll exchange email addresses.

Again, your family is beautiful, your faith is admirable, and you're a darn good writer!!!! You always crack me up with your side comments!

  15. Hello! How're you getting along?

  16. I hadn't made it that far into parenting but I'm sure it will be a challenge. The actually thought of a child doing something inside a plastic container that doesn't flush clean on it's own give me the eebbie-jeebeez.
