Gleaning

This morning our family went to serve for Compa Ministries - a local ministry which provides food to the poor and homeless people of our community. Part of their ministry is called Project Glean. They partner with local farmers who give a portion of their crops over to Compa. Today, our job was picking lettuce from Petrocco Farms in Brighton.

It really was a thrill for this city slicker, who really always dreamed of growing up on a farm. It felt like a whole new world being in the middle of rows and rows of food as far as the eye can see. It was beautiful!

It was a really fun morning to spend together as a family. The girls were really excited to go, and were excellent helpers. They couldn't cut the lettuce since we were using knives, but they were great at loading it in the crates and carrying it over to the trucks. They weren't afraid to get their hands dirty and work hard. Addie did it last weekend with Gary and some of his high schoolers; that time they picked green peppers. The time before that, Gary and his group picked corn.

It only took a couple of hours away from our day, and we were actually disappointed that it didn't take longer! Harvesting for Project Glean is only a September/October thing, so it's over for this year. However, I can't wait until next fall and really hope to get some families together to serve in this way. Sometimes it's hard to find practical ways for our kids to give their time to the Lord in a way they can understand, so I'm thrilled about gleaning!

(Emma even put lettuce on Brody's head so he could carry lettuce too. What a funny girl!)

“Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God.”
Leviticus 19:9,10

  2. ANGIE...I've been wanting to blog about this because our friends' Lane and Bob go to Denver every Saturday to do this. They were going this morning to glean lettuce. I bet you were there together! I looked for them in your pics and didn't see them though.

I think it's such a neat thing to do as a family...and what a hands-on way to teach scripture! I'm embarrassed to say that Lane told me about this at the beginning of September and we never made it happen. I'd love to go next fall and meet up with you at one of the farms.

  6. Wow...that's the perfect way to explain why we thank God for our food when we eat meals. We really are blessed with all the food we put on our plates every day. I would love to do something like that around here with my boys!

  7. I love that you were there gleaning with your little precious family and that you know Meredith and John who are dear to me. My husband Bob was the one that gave out gleaning instructions from the back of the truck. Bob and I actually started our courtship last fall during the gleaning season...and Compa played a part in me seeing the heart of Jesus in this wonderful man I had dated in the 70s in high school. Hope you and your family will come again next year!!! Joyfully,
    Lane

  8. I love that you did this as a family. What a great way to get their hands dirty!:)

There is a group of gleaners out here that picks people's fruit trees in their yards and then gives it to the food bank. It hadn't occurred to me that I could take the kids, but you've inspired me. (I can't even use a new baby as an excuse!)

  9. Your girls will remember this for a long time. What a cool service project for families to do together.

(Plus, I love seeing the coats and hats in these pictures. It snowed here today. SNOWED. Only flurries, but still. It made me feel better to know we're not the only ones knocking on winter's door.)
