Ode to Emma

Couldn't let these Emma-isms slip through the cracks without recording them. There are days I feel like we catch a glimpse of her teen year hormones (I mean, serious DRAMA!), but most days lately she is the sweetest, silliest little thing. Just a bundle of fun and laughter.

Yesterday Addie was singing a whole bunch of made-up songs in her usual LOUD Addie voice. Emma has a lot of patience with her most of the time, but nonetheless, I was surprised when she hadn't lost it with Addie yet. Emma came quietly into the room I was in and asked, "Mommy, how do you spell 'SH'?" and because we had been working on the S-H combo earlier in the day, I didn't think twice about it and told her. She marched into the other room and shouted, "Addie! S-H!"

Last night she was helping me fold some towels and I commented at how well she had folded her pile. She looked at me with her big brown eyes and in all seriousness said, "Well, I'm getting to be like a mommy, you know."

This afternoon she was sitting next to me drawing on a piece of paper. "Some 4-year-olds scribble, you know. But not this 4-year-old. I make art." See below and judge for yourself. (She really is an excellent artist. I'll post some of her other "art" another time.)

A minute later she drew a "map" for me of what kind of train track she wants me to construct for her with her train set. Check it out - she must think I'm amazing.

The other day she came to me and wanted a blanket tied around her neck, like a cape.

"Mommy, can you tie this?" she asked. "I'm not going to be a superhero."
"Oh, what are you going to be?" I asked.
"I'm just going to be a woman."

(Don't be alarmed, I frequently walk around the house with a blanket tied around my neck.)

One game the girls play is "school," which they totally come by naturally. My sisters and I would play school every summer and loved it. Or at least, I loved it. I'll save them the nasty comments and admit that I always had to be the teacher. It's true, I don't deny it. I was the oldest, girls. Get over it. Anyway, Emma and Addie line up all their "Little People" and Emma teaches them. She called me in the other day to count how many "Little People" there were and requested I count Addie as well, because "she's a Little People too, you know."

A new game the girls play is called... well, I have no idea what it's called or if it's really a game. I was in the other room the other day and heard squeals and giggles and knew they were jumping off of the couches into a pile of cushions. But then I heard, "Stop it, Joseph! Mary doesn't like that!" With that, I ran into the living room to see what in the world they were doing. I watched as the tables had obviously been turned, and "Mary" was covering "Joseph's" face with a pillow as "he" squealed. An interesting twist on a well-known story, don't you think? They made up a minute later and were back to their giggling. I'll let you see for yourself...

I think Emma must have been hungry when she drew the map. It looks like a hamburger to me. Or, maybe I'm just hungry...

  9. I loved all of Emma's little "isms". :o) Each one put a smile on my face. And those last pictures of the girls jumping are so cute! Especially the ones mid-air. I would probably be scolding my children not to do that (in fact, I have) but I should just loosen up and let them....look at the pure joy!
